WW1 German M17 Gas Mask and Tin – Guard Regiment Issued

A very good example of the classic WW1 German M17 “Lederschutzmaske” Gas Mask in its absolutely complete and undamaged original configuration.

The leather-faced Gas Mask was first introduced for use by the German Army in 1917 and today of course it is much sought after as being one of the most evocative WW1 pieces.

This example is in very good condition throughout. The leather to the body of the Mask is soft, pliable, and un-punctured with the viewing lenses whole.

To the inside the tan cloth seal at the forehead then bears a nice “B.A.G” marking showing issue from an equipment depot for Guard regiments.

The sprung head and hanging straps atop the Mask are very good and again undamaged, every one is strong and functioning correctly.

Finally, the original weight-bearing cord to the front of the Mask is still present to link it to the zinc securing button on the central head strap. This important item is usually lost as it is simply knotted in place.

The filter is dated 1918 and whilst having some light rust spots this too is actually in good condition for these as more often than not they are so rusty that the filter is pierced, this due to the internal chemicals starting to degrade. Here there are no such holes or extensive rust, with the field grey paint at least 85% present.

In addition, the filter still retains a scarce clip on extra protection filter, this a late war modification to prevent arsenic powder based irritant gasses penetrating the primary filter.

The Gas Mask Tin is original to the Mask and no less pleasing. It retains all its original carrying straps which are undamaged and strong, as well as a good proportion of its original paintwork. Rather nicely the original owner has attached a belt hook to the rear “steadying” strap so that the Gas Mask Tin can be attached directly to the belt. It also appears that at one time the soldier had fixed his details to the bottom of the Tin via a cloth name tag however this is no longer present with just the white outline remaining.

Lastly the spare lens compartment to the inside of the lid retains its original compliment of WW1 dated twin replacement lenses in their original paper sachets.
