About this item

A good example of a 1935 dated German B1E 1Kg Incendiary Bomb dropped over Southampton.

Completely inert and determined by weight, the Bomb is in overall good condition, the casing with numerous markings, and G for 1935, the nose cap with additional stampings, only partially discernible.

The tail fin is intact but with twists from impact damage and surface rust.

These incendiaries used thermite to create a chemical reaction that produced a great deal of heat. The incendiary most used during the Blitz was known as the Brandbombe (fire bomb) and consisted of a magnesium alloy container with thermite filling. They were dropped in vast quantities by the Luftwaffe during WWII. As well as causing fire damage, they served as target markers for following waves of aircraft dropping heavier High Explosive (HE) bombs.

These bomb have a cylindrical body made of magnesium alloy and filled with thermite, an incendiary compound, to which was riveted a three-finned steel tail. These bombs did not explode, but on impact the needle in the igniter was driven into a small percussion cap which in turn ignited the thermite filling and, ultimately, the alloy casing itself which produced heat that was sufficient to melt steel. These bombs were 34.5cm long, and 5cm in diameter.
