Gilt backplate with a silver circular laurel wreath to the locket in gilt the Elephant denoting service in India and the Roman Numerals LXXVIII (78) some service wear to silver but a very scarce item. Gilt & Silver Construction | Scarce Regimental Variant.

Period: Mid-Victorian era (circa 1850s–1870s), during the independent existence of the 78th Highlanders prior to their amalgamation into the Seaforth Highlanders in 1881.

Construction: Gilt backplate, providing a rich golden contrast to the mounted silver elements.

Silver circular laurel wreath affixed to the clasp’s central locket — a traditional emblem of victory and honour.

At the center of the locket is a gilt elephant, a distinctive device used to commemorate the regiment’s distinguished service in India, particularly during the Battle of Assaye (1803) under Sir Arthur Wellesley.

Below the elephant, the Roman numerals “LXXVIII” (78) are inscribed, denoting the regiment’s number.

Condition: Some service-related wear to the silver wreath, consistent with age and use.

Overall structurally sound and visually impressive, with strong remaining gilt and detailed elephant motif.

A very scarce piece, particularly with both gilt and silver elements intact and clearly defined.

Historical Context:

The 78th Foot (Ross-shire Buffs) was known for its exemplary record in India and later in the Persian War and Indian Mutiny.

Such clasps were part of the officer’s dirk belt ensemble, worn during full dress and ceremonial occasions, reflecting regimental pride and battle honours.
