Description
Black japanned papier mache with pewter inlay border and escutcheon to the top. 5/7” x1” x 1 3/4”. Construction identical to the snuff boxes of the period but in miniature. Used to carry the silk patches worn by women as beauty accents and to cover small pox scars. Started in the 16th century, the fashion peaked in the 18th century when the patches took various forms and positions on the face, each with a subtle message to the viewer. Sound and undamaged with expected evidence of age and wear.
