Description

Made in North America and from a group generally recognized as the first ”American” made swords. See Arms and Armor in Colonial America, pl.78, left for another example from this group. Iron hilt with heavy guard comprising forged cup with line bordered edge, broad straight cross guard connected to the cup edge at the quarter points with forged bars and curved knuckle bow. Mushroom form pommel and reeded horn grip. 34 1/8” triple fullered d.e. blade. Untouched with considerable bright finish to the guard and superficial for the period rusting to the pommel and blade. Quality a little better than usual, echoed by the reeded grip and superior preservation as well. Classic for Spanish colonization of the Caribbean and Florida which fueled the rampant piracy of the period.
